Chapter 7

Variety is the Spice of Life

Many women took advantage of the wildly blossoming sexual freedom in Santa Barbara during the late 1970s.

Santa Barbara even had a nude beach for a while, and I went to see how Americans reacted to such freedom. The nude beach was away from the main beaches out in Summerland. I went with Bonnie, who had been there before and we enjoyed swimming and sunbathing without wet clothes on our bodies. Occasionally we saw acquaintances whom we didn't expect there. We had to be extremely careful not to get a sunburn on previously unexposed skin. Generally all had a good time, but of course there were some ill mannered jerks who spoiled it for the rest....

The TGIF Singles Club In between all my flying activity and my work, I still found time every Friday night to go to the singles club. The club had a TGIF dance at the Howard Johnson restaurant. Many women referred to it as the "meat market" but went there anyway. After all it worked for both genders. Going there forced me out of my shell. I had to walk up to a woman and start a conversation. I always had a hang up about that. Maybe it was from growing up in a big city where my parents had instructed me never to talk to strangers.
